Time To Renovate

Last fall, TMC worked with the Midland RockHounds to renovate their natural grass baseball field at Midland's Scharbauer sports complex. Eric Ferland, Head Groundskeeper at the RockHounds Citibank ballpark - home of the Oakland A's Double-A affiliate, observed that the ballpark's nine year old sand based playing surface had accumulated a thick organic layer that was significantly decreasing the overall drainage capacity. Other factors that played into the decision to resurface the field were grading issues with the turf and a loss hybrid bermuda grass base in a few areas. Field Renovation Steps and Description

  • Strip grass and 2 inches of root zone mix from the field, hauling away the removed material to a nearby dumping location.

  • Replace some of the removed root zone material with new USGA sand.

  • Till newly imported sand to depth of 6 inches into existing root zone profile using the GKB Combinator.

  • Laser grade and compact renovated soil profile to create preferred grades and slopes as close to the original grades as possible.

  • Install new sand-based TifSport big roll sod.

Additional TMC Baseball Field Improvements

Along with the baseball field's resurfacing, new trench drains were installed in front of each bullpen to help with surface drainage from the warning track and bullpen skinned areas. Preparations for the upcoming 2011 RockHounds season also included a final laser grading by TMC of the infield skinned area to ensure the desired slopes and grades are present.

With this new field renovation at Citibank ballpark, Eric Ferland and his team can be much more effective at getting the most out of their high performance baseball field as they implement their daily turf management program for the Midland RockHounds this season.
